Make your house move child-proof!

With the increasing number of second steppers, it’s possible that you’ll be undertaking a relocation or the packing and unpacking process with little children. Keep them safe during the procedure by following these steps…

Many people suggest that you organise daycare for your children while you are moving, but this is not always possible. It’s possible that you live far away from family, that you have a youngster who wants to be engaged, or that your moving days have stretched out farther than you had anticipated. Even if you have someone to babysit kids on the day of the move, there will be plenty more ‘unpacking’ days ahead of you, and if you find yourself with little children while moving, don’t panic!

Generally speaking, the most common accidents occur in the house, and the last thing you want is for one of these mishaps to occur when you’re in the middle of a relocation process. While you’re busy labelling boxes and getting to know your new neighbours, take a moment to consider all of the things your child may get up to. With a little additional care and attention, you can make your relocation as safe and accident-free as you possibly can.

Installing safety gates is a must.

Installing safety gates on the stairwell as soon as you are able to, even before the kid enters the home, is highly advised if you have a young child under the age of two. This may seem extreme, but they will be really thrilled and eager to explore, and you may be preoccupied with the relocation and easily sidetracked from observing them as carefully as you would ordinarily.

Secure your windows and doors.

As individuals move around the home with boxes during the moving process, doors and windows are often left open. While you’re busy unpacking and organising your new home, check to see that all the windows and doors are closed and locked, and that your kid cannot escape or climb out while you’re preoccupied with unpacking.

Place furniture in sensible places.

Knowing that toddlers like climbing, we suggest that you keep your furniture away from windows on the move in day, even if you haven’t chosen where you’d want it to go just yet. When you have decided on your final location for them, it’s a good idea to secure the furniture in place, especially if it’s anything large such as a big cabinet or table.

Investigate the garden

Children like spending time outside – especially in the garden, but it’s a good idea to go for a tour around your new yard to see whether your children will be able to make their way into adjoining gardens or out into the street, and to protect the area if this is the case. Because newborns and young children can drown in as little as 5cm of water, it is highly suggested that you implement adequate safety measures as soon as possible if your yard has a pond or water butt.

Get used to your new environment.

Moving to a new neighbourhood, or even simply a new street, means you’ll likely be unfamiliar with the roads, as well as the amount and pace of traffic in your new surroundings. If possible, we encourage that you rehearse the new school run with your children, even if they are older. To assist youngsters in becoming acclimated to a new environment, explore the location with them so that they may get enthused about the new options.
