‘What the Owner Says’
I moved into my central flat when I was studying at the University of London nearby and have enjoyed living here for most of my professional life, more than 30 years. I think the flat is in the best position, on the top (7th) floor with views of London’s skyline and lots of light. It has provided a secure and comfortable home. I enjoy a view of St Pancras’ amazing architecture, when I sit in the sun on our building’s roof terraces. The communal lift and roof access is next to the flat, which is at the front of the building, entry is via Judd Street’s grand main entrance.
The desirable position means I have been able to say my local shops are at St Pancras. Just a few minutes walk to Fortnum and Mason, Kate Spade, White Company, Marks and Spencer etc. Friends love to visit and enjoy a glass of champagne at the St Pancras champagne bar by Searcys. The local area is also spoilt with shops and restaurants in the Brunswick centre and Granary Square. The Curzon cinema, at the Bruswick centre, has great surroundings for a film or even just a coffee and/or glass of wine.
Most of my family are in Yorkshire so King’s Cross station being close is a bonus (along with Euston and St Pancras). With major transport links – less than 2 hours and I’m in York and a day trip to Paris is easy with Eurostar so nearby.
The flat is in an imposing red-brick building and the mansions’ history includes famous residents, the actor Kenneth Williams, with even a blue plaque for the artist Paul Nash. Christmas has been special with carol singing and a Christmas tree in the court yard.
The flat is versatile. I’ve mostly used it as one double bedroom with a lounge. Both main rooms are a good size and the lounge can easily become a second bedroom/bedsit, so it’s also great for 2 students. Excellent cupboard space/storage. Our resident caretaker is very helpful and ensures the building is well-maintained. There’s a very long lease (share of freehold, more than 900 years remain). The managing agents ensure the building maintains its great reputation – one of the best managed mansion buildings in the area.
I am leaving after many happy years as it is time for a new chapter. I feel the next resident(s) will be very fortunate.
